I participated in a seminar at an elderly facility recently. The residents in this place ranged in ages from 68 to 103. A question I posed was "What diseases were mostly responsible for the passing of your parents." The answers were unanticipated. I was expecting to hear responses such as, heart disease, cancer, automobile accidents, alzheimers and stroke. What I heard instead was tuberculosis, small pox, rickets, emphysema, and whooping cough. Why is it that in the generations which started at the turn of the last century and grew up during the great depression of the 30's and the great war of the 40's didn't suffer from the same afflictions as we do today? Of course, a part of the answer includes the advances in medicine having been able to erradicate tuberculosis, small pox, rickets and the such from the pathological landscape. However, why did these people not suffer from cancer or heart disease, the scurge of the generations descending after World War II.
After receiving some suggestions from the audience and calling for a vote it was decided that two major contributing factors to the advent of modern diseases are:
At the turn of the century the parents of these participant's socioeconomic classes were rural agricultural or urban factory workers. In either case, the common denominator was that these people sweat a lot. The outdoor agricultural people worked in the fields and sweat all day while the urban factory workers slaved over assembly lines or sewing machines and perspired to exhaustion. Regardless of the toxicity of the environments in which they worked, perspiration was key to detoxification of their bodies in order to maintain clean blood and cellular integrity. Once the agricultural workers started moving to the cities and urban sweat shops became air conditioned, everything changed. People worked in a more comfortable environment but the sweat stopped and the toxins in the body started increasing. The toxic levels in the body of the parents were passed down to the offsprings and greater accumulation of foriegn poisons started building in the bodies causing cancers and plaques to where cancer and heart disease have become the greatest human killers on our planet.
So, for many the answer to help detoxify the body may be to go back and sweat through excercise and hard work in a non air-conditioned environment. For most this is not the answer. The alternative may include infrared therapy through the use of an infrared suana or the Biomat. The Biomat is the better solution for many reasons. First of all, it takes up less space then an infrared suana. It can be folded up and stored in a closet whereas an infrared sauna takes a large amount of real estate in a persons home. Second, it costs less to purchase. At $1,350.00 the cost is at least half to a third of that of an infrared sauna. Third, it takes less power to run providing a significant savings in power bills. And last, one is more likely to use it then an infrared sauna.

The keyword to help us become sane in this insane world we live in is "Balance". We are so forced to live in this fast and frenzied 24/7 world of ours with smart phones and CNN and an overload of information that we don't have the opportunity to live in balance. That is why stress and all of the diseases of stress are so prevelant in our world. In fact we are so good at passing stress onto our children that they develop the symptoms of stress related illness before they even have the chance to live.
In studying the brain we learn of something called the SAD Curve. The first part of the SAD Curve is Stress. Stress comes from situations or input we believe we can control but in actuallity can't. For example take two workers. Both are aware of layoffs that are imminent. The first person is a single mom with a mortgage, car payment, and credit card bills. Fear of layoff and loss of income causes much stress in this persons life. Stress shows itself as elevated pulse rate and blood pressure, lack of immunity to disease (i.e. easy to catch colds or the flu) forced speech and inattention, and lack of executive control in decision making. The second person is a single mom who knows she will have a 10 million dollar inheritance next month. She could care less about her job and knows that her child, mortgage and car payments will be taken care of. She has no stress. She also has more control over her situation.
If stress is not relieved and is allowed to endure for a while (1 to 3 years), then the condition becomes more permanent and graduates to the second phase which is Anxiety. Anxious people don't know why they are stressed, they just live under continual sympathetic system overload and show amplified symptioms of stress.
If Anxiety is allowed to continue for even a longer period of time then graduation to the third part of the SAD curve is established which is Depression. Depression is continued stress with hopelessness. A depressed person has a very difficult time seeing their way out of this cycle and withdraws from many aspects of life.
To prevent the Sympathetic System overload which comes from the SAD Curve one must practice active Stress Relief. Good ways to do this is yoga, meditation, deep breathing excercises, aerobic excercise or 20 minutes a day on the Biomat. With the Biomat one gets the relaxation and stress relief desired along with much much more. You would get the detox and improved circulation effects as well.
