negative ions in a waterfall

Negative Ions

An ion is an electrically charged atomic particle. When water separates into atoms (which may occur during movement or impact) negative and positive ions are separated (OH- and H+). Near a waterfall, in a forest, after a lightening storm or at the ocean most of us feel invigorated and refreshed which can be attributed to the abundance of negative ions (OH-) in the air. Most homes and buildings with concrete and using a/c are very low in negative ions due to their high absorption rate.

In 1991, scientists Neher and Sakmann received a Nobel Prize for their discovery of the cell’s ion channels. The cell membrane controls nutrition absorption and waste elimination through these ion channels. It is known that the more acid ones cells become the more likely one is to contract disease. One of the functions of a particular type of ion channel is to exchange 3 Sodium ions for 2 Potassium ions whenever the surrounding environment is alkaline, thus always trying to keep the environment inside the cell alkaline. When the number of negative ions in the body is increased, cell function is activated and metabolism is increased. By using the Biomat to bombard the body with a high concentration of negative ions one is exciting the ion channels and causing a greater alkalinization of the cells.

Negative ions also increase levels of the chemical serotonin, which helps alleviate depression, relieves stress and boosts mental alertness.
